Sepak Takraw !

Our takraw team went into IHG with 12 players and only 3 players with prior match experience. Most in the team were not familiar with the rules to start off with. Before our first match against hall 13, we had not even trained on a proper takraw court.

Our first match was against Hall 13. We had a good start by taking down the first set after a tough fight. However, nerves got to our players during the 2nd and 3rd set and we lost our opening game of the season. However, our players knew the potential we had and trained hard before our next game against hall 10.

For our second match against hall 10, due to some good serving by the opponents’ first tekong, we lost our first set quite convincingly. However, our players were not to be denied a first win as we stormed to a convincing win in the 2nd and 3rd set.

The next match was up against hall 13 again. This time, we went into the game confident that if we played to our potential, we knew we were not going to lose again. And true enough, we won all our 3 sets by good margins. And we were through to the quarter finals for the first time since who remembered.

We were unlucky enough to be drawn against last year’s finalists, hall 7. However, we knew that there was a chance for an upset. Although both teams were more or less even in the first set, our players made more unforced error than the opponents and lost the first set narrowly. In our 2nd set, it was obvious that our team wanted to win more than the opponent and we managed to get back on level terms with 1 game won apiece. There was an unfortunate delay in the 3rd set and the game had to be moved to be played in Hall 3’s indoor court. Not used to the crowd and bigger court size, our players were visibly overawed by the crowd and made countless mistakes to give the set and match away.

Unfortunate but our journey came to an end. However, we met our expectations by going one up and making it to the quarters, laying the foundation for the team next year. We will definitely build upon this experience and go even further next year! Cheers!
