Hall 2 Rugby by Lee Weijie

For many of us, there was no 8am on a Sunday. But our ruggers were already at Saint Andrew’s School for the second part of the rugby tournament. The team could play up to 3 games, if only they win every single game. Any mistake could cost them to go home straight away.

Quarter-finals against hall 5: 7-0
Lethargic and sluggish, the team went into the game. It was only after the halftime, the team woke up to the game. NTU confessions famed Kenryu Wang kicked the ball so deep into hall 5’s half, their winger was quickly running back to it, little did he know that our Lim ZhiHao who was at least 30 meters behind was quickly covering the distance. With lightning bolt speed, ZhiHao burned their winger and took the ball to score a try.

Semi-finals against hall 6: 0-0 ( Hall 2 win on penalties)
This is one of the toughest game we have anticipated. Hall 6 was second in last year’s IHG. Ex Hall King Chia Wang Peng was inches away from scoring a try when the ball decided to bounce out of his Bodybuilder chest. Our team showed resilience when defending against hall 6 in the dying moments of the extra time. Nil nil, we went on to penalties! Hall 6 fired both the penalties wide while Arnold Wee and Teo Yu Hao scored their kicks in style. WE ARE THROUGH TO THE FINALS! Revenge couldn’t be sweeter as Hall 6 beat us on penalties last year.

Finals against Hall 3: 14-21
They are the reigning championship holders for many years. And for the last 2 years, no team have scored a try against them. Our ruggers know how much they have to work to win this. We were all tired from the two games before this, while Hall 3 only played ONE game (Some Hall walked over when they know they will be playing with Hall 3). Despite the fatigue, our ruggers went into the game strong-willed, wanting to dethrone them. 3 mins into the game, Kenryu Wang feigned his opponent with his super acting skills and he sprinted 50 meters to score the try! 7-0! Seven minutes into the game, Arnold Wee took the game to 14-0 with a run down the wing with his quick short legs sprinting. With half of the team in ivp, the reigning champions were shocked. As the game continued, our players grew increasingly fatigued. Hall 3 then came back to score right before half time, and twice in the second half. We lost.

We may have lost the finals, but we walk tall after the game ended. We did our very best, put our bodies on the line for our teammates. Special thanks to our supporters who came down early in the morning and Our Captain Tan Wei Qiang, whose nags brought the team to another level!

Silver Medalists: Tan WeiQiang, Teo YuHao, Lim ZhiHao, Chia WangPeng, Kenryu Wang, Lim Shao Wei, Malcom Lin, Haikal Yahya, Jacob Ng, Wilfred Lim, Jon Ong, Chang Chern Yee, Joseph Lou, Arnold Wee, Poon Kip Mun, Jonathan Wong, Nicholas Tai, Matt Goh Qi Quan, Harold Teo and Lee Weijie.

Hall 2 Soccer Champions! by Clement Cher

Turf city was where our soccer boys had the chance to redeem themselves.
Hall 2 took the lead when a sublime freekick by Captain Chai from an acute angle fooled everyone and found its way into the back of the net. 1-0

Stout defending by our astute backline kept Hall 3 at bay, with Alvin Bay sliding in to clear the ball off the line, onto the post and out for safety.

A massive clearance by Gan found Sim through on goal who held off 3 defenders to slot the ball home. 2-0
An awkward bounce of the ball led to our leftback Bay slicing his clearance and the ball unfortunately found itself in our net. 2-1

But 4 years of heartache has taught us to believe and to fight on. The closest Hall 3 came was a shot that struck our cross bar but as time ticked by, it was apparent our boys would see the game through.
We won. Tears were shed (actually just Bay, though he claims he fell and hurt himself) and our boys brought the gold home.

'Nuff said. Hope you all enjoyed your CNY dinner.
Special thanks to those who made their way down. And shaowei for being welfare/publication/sport sec all at once.
Presenting to you, the soccer champion of IHG 2012/2013: wee kiat, haobin, bay, Kenneth Gan, Yong Geng, Bryan Han, Ming long, Arnold, billy, Kenneth sim, YuHao, yong kai, nic bro, Kenryu, wangpeng, parthi, ah Lian, xiuxiu, clement, chin, not forgetting Glen, Yen Hao, Terrence and returning wizard harry Yuzheng.

Hall 2 Female Basketball Champions! by Daphne Tan

It was time for revenge. Having lost to Hall 8 previously in the netball quarters, we vowed to return them the favour.

A quick cheer by our Captain Xiaohui Tan ("Just do your best and I will RAM THEM DOWN") left the girls with conviction that the night's game was theirs. All they had to do was be calm and composed and the rest would be a piece of cake.

The game started steadily with Xiaohui marking her territory with two 2-pointer shots. Although the momentum of the game was disrupted when one of the hall 8 players fell, the girls recovered quickly with Daphne Tan putting in a shot and Kun Yan suavely converting a penalty shot. Substitutions were made - Sagaana for Daphy; Mai for Xiaohui - and our girls continued to dominate the court. Hall 8 took advantage of Xiaohui's absence and chased the score to 7-5 but our girls wouldn't let them be. They halted their attack and by the end of the quarter, Hall 2 was leading 10-5.

The rest of the match was a blur. Affectionately dubbed "An-gee-P" (moniker to MVP), our star player Angela Yap whizzed around the court, making countless steals with her stealthy steps, then converting them into crowd-pleasing 3-pointers. Hall 8's defense was greatly weakened as "Twin towers" Shell and Sagaana stood before them, threatening to cut their every move. Playmaker Yin Leong was outstanding with her fast drives and was clearly the crowd's favorite as her fan club's thundering cheers chorused to her every move. Intimidating even when off the court, Mai jie fought fiercely and entertained the crowd with her funny antics.

By the start of the fourth quarter, the air was sweet with the smell of victory. Or it could just be Welfare Mama Zilin Choo with her stash of Yakult with love. The girls eventually won 55-34. Enough said.

We would like to thank our coaches Chun Hoe and Shaowei, our sports secretary Art and everyone from Hall 2 who have supported our journey thus far. Presenting to you, the basketball champions: Xiaohui, Kunyan, Yanyan, Shell, Sah, Jasmine, Shimin, Angela, Mai, Sagaana, Liwen, Zilin, Jocelyn, Huimin, Art, Cheyenne, Zhekang, Yuhui, Aneza, Jacie, Yilin and Wenxin.

Hall 2 Soccer Semi-finals by Lynette Teo

For the first time in 5 years, Hall 2's soccer team entered the semi-finals against Hall One, and boy did they impress. The turnout was certainly impressive, with an army of supporters decked out in white, and even some family support (Billy's mom and sister)!
For a match that was hampered by the incumbent weather, our players managed to make the best of the muddy pitch and held most of the ball possession for the first half. Billy's free kick came in close but alas, it was a miss. Things started to pick up when a corner taken by Ming Long led to a header by Yonggeng, who scored the first goal. The second goal was an individual effort by Kenneth Sim, whose 30-yard shot managed to find the top right hand corner of the goal post. His spectacular goal roused cheers from the stands, while supporters from Hall One were left with their mouths agape.
In the second half, the team managed to dominate yet again, with the same intensity and vigour they held in the first half. However, the muddy pitch almost cost them as the team was not used to the ground conditions. The third goal was a nailbiter as Ming Long's shot was caught in the waterlogged field, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GOAL LINE. As the opponent's goalkeeper frantically tried to salvage the situation, Teo Yuhao stuck to the game plan and secured the win for the team.
As conditions of the match worsened, changes were made and several substitutions took place: Bryan for Ah Lian; Billy for Kenryu; Arnold for Clement; Kenneth Sim for Yong Kai and lastly, Yuhao for Nicholas Tai.
The team effort led to a 3-0 victory against Hall One, who didn't even manage to threaten our team's chances because of the strong defensive line maintained by Yonggeng, Kenneth Gan, Alvin Bay and Haobin. Special mention also goes out to Arnold Wee for his hard tackling, who played his role as defensive midfielder well.
As for post-match entertainment, the crowd would certainly like to thank the Basketball seniors and Birthday Boys Yangzhi and Shaowei for their sportiness on the field. Their simultaneous underwear tearing was definitely a crowd pleaser and kept true to Hall 2's birthday tradition.
Our soccer team has made a historic leap to the finals tonight, and we'd like to thank all those involved for their commitment as well as supporters for keeping up the Hall 2 Spirit. Hall 2 will play against Hall 3 this Friday evening (timing to be confirmed), and in light of our annual Chinese New Year dinner, we'd like to ask residents who can make it to please go down to support the team! Even though we can't be there in person, we'll definitely be there in spirit! Our hearts are all with the players and we hope you'll do us proud!:)

IHG Week 9 Updates

13 Feb Table Tennis: In today's final pool, our table tennis team suffered a defeat at the hands of Hall 6. For both the male and female singles, Go TiongSen and Melody Tai lost 0-3 in both their matches. For the male doubles, Kiev & Glen Abraham Liang put up a good fight but eventually lost 1-3.

Tifen & ZiLin Choo managed to secure the only win of the night with 3-0, but unfortunately their victory was overshadowed by our defeat at mixed doubles, where Jon Ong and Adelene Tan lost 0-3.
Overall, our hall lost 1-4.

Despite the defeat, we can see the effort and time our tennis players took to train for this match and we wish them only the best of luck in making a comeback next year.

16 Feb Track: Our Hall 2 track team did us proud today by powering ahead with super speed to an impressive 3rd place finish.

The first 4x100m team of Glen Abraham LiangKenryu WangChia Wang Peng and Abdul Adib were head and shoulders ahead of the competition with a 2nd place finish.

Next up, their female counterparts Steph YeoAlisa ChuaMainisah Buang and Angela Yap showed they too had the speed and grit to make it to second.

In the 4x400m male competition, Wang Peng, Bryan HanEugeneTang and Jun Hao emerged a respectable 4th placing. Next, our female runners once again brought home the second placing in the 4x400 race. We ended off the 4x800m mixed race with Angela Ng, Edmund, Melody and Alvin Lee coming in 10th.

Overall, the team's need for speed and sheer stamina brought us to a 3rd place finish. Congrats to the team and we're proud of being home to this team of swift sprinters!

16 Feb Rugby: Hall 2 ended this festive week on a happy note as our rugby boys brought home two victories, allowing us to advance to quarter-finals. After a walkover match against Hall 15, our restless rugby guys were looking for an opportunity to showcase our hard work against Hall 14 on the pitch.

Two minutes into the game, an unforeseen tackle to Jonathan Eggy Wong caused him an early exit.

Our forever handsome Chia Wang Peng scored on his first try and Arnold Wee executed a perfect kick to score on penalty in the first half.
With our forwards giving trouble to Hall 14's defence, our back Limsanity ZhiHao Lim took advantage of the chaos and scored in the second half.

The seamless cooperation between the forwards and the backs allowed us to win the group stage against Hall 14 with a final scoreline of 13-0.
Score: 13-0

Well done rugby team!

IHG Week 8 Updates

The week was difficult for both players and supporters of Hall 2 as they experienced unexpected losses. Journeys of some teams were forced to end prematurely. Nevertheless, they took their losses with sheer courage and made promises to themselves to do better next sports season.

“If you learn from a loss, you have not lost.”

4 Feb 2013, Monday

Netball: Our netball girls didn't make it through the Quarters :( The experienced players from Hall 8 made the fight a tough one and eventually we lost with a score of 31-19. It was heart-breaking for them to accept their defeat after the match. It takes a lot of time and effort to perfect this sport and I believe they will train even harder for next IHG! In fact, we are so proud of them for making it to the Quarters. Thank you Daphne Tan Su Yin, Xiaohui Tan, Cheyenne Ching, YuHui Tay Angela Ng, Leong Hui Min, Lai Chien Siew, Lim Shi Min and team for the good fight!

Takraw: Our takraw boys didn't make it either. It was a close fight. Hall 7 was just lucky to win the Quarters match with a score of 2-1.
To: Teo Yu Hao, Alvin Chin, Alvin Bay, Hao Bin, Nicholas Tai, Ming Long, Wang Peng, Yong Geng, Kenneth Gan, Billy, Clement and team.. Despair not. This is not the end. We strongly believe that there is never a "game over" for sports. It is just a setback; we will win it back next year!

5 Feb 2013, Tuesday

Table Tennis: While we were busy interacting with some international friends and playing games at the international night, our table tennis team were playing a different game - IHG Table Tennis. They played to the best of their abilities during the matches against Hall 11 but lost(3-2). Let's take a look at the break down of the battles..

Our racket queen ZiLin Choo fought hard against an ivp player but lost the single match to our opponent :( Our girls, Adelene Tan and Melody Tai, took revenge for this loss by winning the girls double match!(:

On the other hand, the strong opponents from Hall 11 caused our guys single and doubles to be out of the game :( Thank you Keiv, Jon Ong and Go TiongSen for the effort though. We really appreciate it. Lastly, our unbeatable duo: Ti fen and Glen won the mixed double match!(: It was one-sided, well done players! :D

Note: They will be playing Final Pool at a later date. Please give them your support then(:

7 Feb 2013, Thursday

Squash: The squash team put up a spirited display in thursday's final pool match against traditional powerhouse Hall XVI but eventually fell short.

The first player to warm the court is Zhi Rui. After a fairly even start with several impressive rallies, he eventually succumbed to his opponent's steady and error free game plan. Losing the first set to the IVP squash captain.

Our second representative Edwin, started the match with the upper hand for being able to settle in before his opponent. However a series of long rallies with his IVP opponent took its toll on Edwin. Despite saving several shots that seemed out of his reach, the set went in favour of hall XVI.

Our racquet queen Zilin, fell short in her match. Despite out playing her opponent for periods of the match, luck was not on her side as several strikes by her were miraculously saved by the opponent. Similarly, Hui Shan’s attempts to fight the representative from Hall XVI were unsuccessful.

Although our player Louis won the last set by a fine margin, we lost the game.

In a nutshell, it was a close encounter that is not faithfully represented by the scoreline.
The entire squash team has put in hard work and we hope to see more of them next season.

8 Feb 2013, Friday

Soccer: Our soccer team was in top form today as they left no chance for Hall 12 to even come close to scoring one goal.

An early goal by Kenneth Sim that was assisted by Bryan Han set the tone for the match, and the goals just kept coming in. Another goal was made by Yong Geng Tan with a header, all thanks to a cross from Wong Zi Hao Billy, who had also earlier on scored a goal. The next goal came from Bryan Han, who was a key player in this match as he fended off Hall 12's defenders with his speed and agility. Teo Yu Hao with his fighting spirit, added on yet another goal, showing that Hall 2 will not rest on its laurels. As if we were hungry for goals tonight, Ming Long dribbled with amazing speed and it looked set to add on to our tally but alas, it was a miss that got the crowd exclaiming with shock.

The final score was 5-0. Kudos to Alvin Bay, who was pivotal to Hall 2's victory tonight with his slick moves and speedy reflexes. Special mention should be made to Arnold Wee too for his aggressive yet superb tackling skills, but also, for his failed attempt at weaselling out of a yellow card with a cutesy plea.

Well done Hall 2! We wish you all the best for Semi-finals! (:

Hall 2 Water Polo Semi-finals by Chua Yuan Pin

  • Thank you to all supporters that made the effort to come down to SRC Swimming Pool for the polo match. All the polo guys truly appreciate your screams and cheers.

What does defeat do to a man? It tears him down, and breaks him up. But what does defeat do to a team? The team will pull each other up, and gel stronger than ever.
Water polo is a sport of which the game can change at the flick of a wrist. Our Hall 2 Water Polo Boys did a valiant job last night, but did not manage to eke out a win with a final score of 7-6.
It was the first time in the IH season for a game to be played the full length of the pool, and also the game was split into 4 quarters of 8 minutes instead of 2 halves of 10 minutes as played up till the quarter-finals.

In the first quarter, our boys were seemingly nervous, with some confusion. Hall 11 capitalized on this, and dominated the first quarter with a score of 4-1. A quick pep talk by Grand Master Ray invigorated the team, and fresh tactics were applied. The second quarter proved much better and our Hall 2 boys pulled the score to 4-3 thanks to goals from Jon Ong and Zhi Hong.

The 3rd quarter was defensively tight for both teams. All the players were marked tight, and there were many possession turn overs. Another 2 quick-fire goals by Ray and Zhi Hong allowed us to enter the final quarter with a slight lead of 5-4.

The final quarter was intense. Players were sacked continually, and tempers flared. Within the first 2 minutes, our Polo Boys managed to squeeze a goal in by lobbing their keeper and we were up 6-4. But with exhaustion creeping up, and tiredness burning their limbs, they were powerless to stop Hall 11's IVP player from pulling his tricks in the last few minutes.
Our golden japan boy, Kenryu, made magnificent saves, but was unable to prevent the final few balls from entering our net.

Hall 2 Water Polo Boys lost with a final score of 7-6.

We would like to congratulate all the polo boys for showing their dedication to our hall. They have trained every single day, weekends included, at 7am. Such passion and determination to succeed truly exemplifies our Hall 2 spirit.
    Well done gentlemen.

WELCOME TO HALL OF RESIDENCE 2
