IHG and IHRG 2012

Wednesday, 26th December, 2012
We won the basketball(M) match this morning. It was a close shave and our basketball players managed to emerge victorious in the battle against hall 12. The final score was 46-45, Yu Hao's witty play at the final seconds put our team at the top, advancing to the quarter finals of Basketball IHG! Well done guys, we are proud of you!(:
Captured: our basketball player's powershot!(:
Our carrom players kicked off their first round of matches against Hall 11. Although our players gave their best shot, they were still unable to beat their strong opponents, losing 0-5. The team fared slightly better in the second round against Hall 7, with Choo Zi Lin winning the ladies' single match despite the discouraging first round. However, Hall 2 did not build on her victory, losing with the final score of 1-4. Team captain Bhim Sen Kumar strategically reshuffled the players, thus ending round three against Hall 5 with a score of 2.5-2.5 - Regina and Jessie winning ladies' double, Zi Lin winning ladies' single and Chang Yuh with a draw. Our players ended the long day with the last round against Hall 12. Even though Bhim and Zi Hao managed to win the mens' double, we eventually lost graciously with a score 1-4.
Thursday, 27th December, 2012
On Day two of carrom prelims, our players lost to Hall 9, Hall 15 and Hall 1 despite giving their all.
Friday, 28th December, 2012
Hockey(M): Our hockey boys dominated the game today keeping the ball within the opponent's half. However they were not able to capitalize on their chances during the game against Hall 13 and it was down to penalties to decide the game. The boys were unfortunate to lose out on penalties by 2 - 1.
Volleyball(M): Our volleyball boys fought hard to a well deserved victory against hall 5. Hall 5 took our boys by surprise and won the first set 27-25 but our boys came back strong in the 2nd set to a comfortable 25-7 win. The game was to be decided on the final set which we won by a narrow margin of 25-22. Final 6 in the last set: Wei Hong(captain), lizhong, Jia Hao, Bronson, wee Kiat and Yuan Pin (libero: Wei Kang) We witnessed a display of perseverance and courage! :D

IHG and IHRG 2012

Wednesday, 19th December, 2012
As the sun begun to rise, our lovely Hall 2 Basketball Girls demolished Hall 11 with a score of 50-12. Hall 2's Captain led by example, continually terrorizing their defenses, rendering them helpless to the barrage of points. Every single player called up to the team played a part in the annihilation of the opposition team. There was never a question of who the dominate team were.

In the mid day sun, our Volleyball Boys were at Hall 2 Volleyball Courts battling it out in the Winner's Pool. The opponents drawn were Hall 14. Despite Captain Wei Hong encouraging the team with his shouts and the cheers of supporters around the court, the boys lost with a score line of 25-12 and 25-14. When the match ended, Hall 14's Captain told Wei Hong that the match was very even, just that Lady Luck was on their side that day. Lets take encouragement from this that even our opponents felt lucky to have beaten us!

On the Rec side, our Chinese Chess team, despite their master tactician moves, lost their games. But every match was so close, with our team always threatening the opponents.

We scored!!! :D

Our volleyballer were flying to block the opponent's "blow"(:

C Chess players (deep in thoughts).

Thursday, 20th December, 2012
As the day begun, our Hall 2 Softball Boys headed out to the lower fields of SRC. It had rained the night before and the pitch was muddy and water logged. With no regard for grace, our boys dived right into the mud, never hesitating to slide to the plates or jump into the mud to catch the ball. Despite decorating their legs with mud and blood, we lost to Hall 6 with a score of 11-9.

Whist the Softball Boys were battling it out in the hot and muddy fields, our Basketball Boys were headed to the sheltered courts of NIE. This was hardly a basketball match, as quoted from our Sports Sec Shao Wei, 'This is more like a rugby match!" Numerous fouls were thrown about and tempers flared constantly. Hall 14 were not able to keep up with the tenacity and talents of Hall 2, thus resorting to underhanded means to halt play and break up our attacks. Our gentlemen were gracious and allowed Hall 14 to score some points, but their never stood a chance against our well trained team. Hall 2 led the scoreline from start to finish, and with a final scoreline of 36-26, a testimony to their championship chances.

As the sun rose to it highest, our softball girls trudged out to the lower fields of SRC. The blazing heat did not do much to dry the severely waterlogged fields. During the warm ups, every girl showed their dedication, shouting commands and running for every ball. Not one girl had a white spot left on their jerseys after the warm ups. Daphne led by example, pitching the ball with pin point precision, striking out several players with each inning. However, despite their best efforts, Hall 2 Softball Girls lost to Hall 12 with a score line of 6-2.

Our Rec Chinese Chess Team lost to Hall 13 in Round 6 but masterminded a win in Round 7 against Hall 14. Sadly, after expending all their scheming tactics and using shrewd moves, it was not enough for Hall 2 to progress to the next stage.

One of our softball guys in action!

Our basketball are awesome! Just look at this(:

Our star player of softball!

Pondering over next c.chess move.

Friday, 21st December, 2012
Our hockey girls, each equipped with a stick and an indomitable spirit, fought their best fight, but were cracked by Hall 16. The match was intense and exciting, with Hall 2 Girls doing their best to claw back a goal. Countless shots were taken in the dying minutes of the match. Every girl on the pitch ran their legs off, shouted their lungs hoarse. Despite a defeat, we can take confidence that we were merely unlucky. Lets commend the Hockey Girls for showing their fighting spirit!

The brainest bunch of Hall 2 convened together, forming the Hall 2 Scrabble Team. We managed a win in only 1 out of 5 rounds played, but every loss was very close, only by a few points. The letters drawn were often difficult to incorporate into the board, one can say that Lady Luck was truly not on our side. The opponents constantly drew vowels and accompanying letters, making their game much simpler and easier than ours.

Hockey girls trying their very best at the pitch!

Saturday, 22nd December, 2012
One can never question the dedication of Hall 2 residents. Despite it being a Christmas Weekend, our Scrabble team stayed in Hall and many supporters came down to support the match against Hall 3 and Hall 12. We lost in both matches played. Disappointment was clear on our players' faces. Let us all encourage and cheer them on. They will be training harder for next year's IHRG and they will do us proud!

IHG and IHRG 2012

Photo of the day..

Santa Claus's new pasttime?(; This santa turned out to be none other than our own volleyball player Yuan Pin, our best dressed volleyball player this afternoon. Our volleyball team crushed their opponents, Hall 1 volleyballers, with powerful spikes and won the match with scores 25-3 and 25-10! Keep up the good work!(:

Also doing us proud were the basketball girls, showcasing their amazing speed and ball sense on the court and eventually trashing Hall 7 with a commendable 35-12!

Our snooker team didn't make it to the next level yesterday :( Nevertheless, good effort!(: They played their best against other teams' IVP players! This is not a simple task as it requires a great amount of courage!

Thank you all players from sports and rec!(: We are always there for you all because we can feel the passion you have for the sports/rec you are in. JIA YOU! :D

water polo write up original

Waterpolo Semi finals

We heard the draw on the day of the 2nd preliminary round match against Hall 10. We would be facing Hall 16 in the quarters and Hall 6 in the semis. This was apparently the hardest draw we could have gotten as finalists, and we got it. Sometimes, the road to the finals is an easy one. Ours was not one of them, nor was it a road, since waterpolo is not land-based. But I digress. All those Sundays spent in the pool in Toa Payoh, swimming our guts out, losing our pride to the National girls team (excluding our IVP players), was all for this.

Dear readers, at this point in time, close your eyes, rub it hard and pretend that you are time travelling to the not-so-distant future. Now that you are reading this, I assume you have already opened them. Were the stars and hyperspace effect good? You are now at the poolside. A sea of white jerseys and green jerseys gathered at opposite ends of the pool to watch their men in trunks (In our case, men and shark) battle it out. Our captain, Ray, delivered his pre-match briefing with the cheering (more like incessant chattering) as the background noise. “Hall 6 is faster and fitter, but we have more skills, more technique. Play to your strengths, and we’ll take this game down,” I kind of remember him saying. Or something along that line. The starting line-up was confirmed, the game about to start anytime.

I took my position, standing beside our (self-declared) guest of honour, Mr Ervin Lai. The whistle blew, and immediately, Ray was angry. Alvin Kuek, our starting centre back for the day and rock star extraordinaire had swum into the centre forward position. The bench was silent. As a non-player for the day, I could tell the stark contrast between the supporters and the bench. They were still cheering us on, but we knew we were not doing well. The score was deadlocked at 0-0 for a long period. As much as we had our spirits up before the game, it was not looking good. Suddenly, our rock star, still in his wrong position, had possession of the ball near their goal. He threatened to shoot a few times before unleashing a shot past their keeper. And that was about all the action the quarter had to offer.

The first quarter ended. It was time for the team talk, and Ray had to come up with a motivation speech in double quick time. We did not play well at all.

“Eh. Fuck you all. What the fuck was that?!”

Motivational indeed. The rest of the talk was not important because it only focused on how we should be playing and stuff people are not interested in. We did up our game in the 2nd quarter, playing with more fighting spirit and determination (I was watching, so I watched with more fighting spirit and determination), not letting our opponents have an easy time. Kenryu, half heart throb, half Street Fighter superhero decided enough was enough. After something happened (the splashing had covered whatever was going on, so nobody could see anything. I think he used 天), the ball ended up in the net again. Kuek, Jian Long and Ray also scored. Long story short, we were winning at half time. 5-1.

Buoyed by the performance in the 2nd quarter, our players upped their game in the 3rd quarter, scoring another three goals. By then, Jon (who had up till this moment been quite unlucky in front of the goal) had opened his account, and our most improved player, Kiat Yao (who had already scored before, being quite the lucky guy) had swum the length of the pool to pass the ball to their keeper. Ray was breaking out his party tricks. When he scored his (in)famous back shot (for the first time), the crowds cheers were contrasted with the benches chorus of boos and other vulgarities directed at Ray. Normally mild, Kenryu looked like he was about to bite someone’s ear off. I took a few steps away, afraid for my own safety. At 8-1, the game looked well and truly over.

But of course, like all stories go, the game is never over until it was over. And so the last quarter proved. With tired legs, tired minds, and a not small dose of complacency, we managed to concede 3 goals while scoring 2. HOWEVER, no waterpolo game is complete without seeing Francis the shark turning on his jets, and so he obliged. With his (metaphorical) dorsal fin slicing through the surface of the water, he turned and went past the Hall 6 players like a motorboat, not once, not 10 times, but TWICE! Unfortunately, their keeper managed to save both of his shots. And so it ended, 10-4. We hit double digits for the first time this season, and it was evident how much our players have grown since we first entered the pool some 4 months ago. Of course, not everyone could play a part in this game, but the passion shown by those who weren’t playing was encouraging. The final hurdle against Hall 3 is high, but not insurmountable. Sir Edmund Hillary managed to climb Mount Everest, but that has nothing to do with us. This is not mountain climbing. This is waterpolo.

Waterpolo Semi finals

Waterpolo Semi finals (Edited)

Facing hall 16 in the quarters and hall 6 in the semi-finals was probably the hardest draw we could have gotten as finalists, and we got it. Sometimes, the road to the finals might be an easy one, but for us, it definitely wasn’t the case. All those Sundays spent in the pools over at Toa Payoh, swimming our guts out, and the very match when we lost our pride to the National girls’ team (except the IVP players), was just for this.

Now, close your eyes, and pretend that you are travelling into the not-so-distant past.

*Now that you are seeing this line, I assume you have already opened them.*

Imagine yourself by the poolside over at SRC. You see a sea of white jerseys and green jerseys gathered at opposite ends of the pool to watch their men in trunks. (In our case, men and shark) battle it out. In the midst of the passionate cheering, Ray, the captain of the water polo team delivers his pre-match briefing,

“THEY might be faster and fitter, but we have more skills, more techniques. Play to your strengths, and we’ll TAKE THIS GAME DOWN!”

The starting line was confirmed, and the game about to start anytime. I took my position behind our (self-declared) guest of honour, Mr Ervin Lai, anticipating a thrilling match ahead.

The whistle went off and at this very moment, Ray was burning with anger, for Alvin, our starting centre back for the day (and rock star extraordinaire) had swum into the centre forward position instead. The stark contrast between the cheering supporters and the very silence over at the bench told the seriousness of the situation.

More than a quarter into the game, the score was still deadlocked at 0 – 0. We knew we weren’t doing well, but the supporters never once gave up on us. Just when we thought the first quarter is going to end off with an empty score sheet, our rock star, still in his wrong position, gained possession of the ball near the goal. He threatened to shoot a few times, and with all eyes locked on him, sent a clean shot pass the keeper.

The whistle went off, and it’s time for a motivational speech by Ray before the next quarter of the game starts.

“Eh. Fuck you all. What the fuck was that?!”

That was the very line which motivated the team, one that’s all so impactful, all so close to the heart. The rest of the talk was pretty much about how we should be playing and the different techniques that we could have employed.

With that very line in mind, we played the 2nd quarter of the game with more fighting spirit and determination, never once allowing the opponents have an easy time. When we were at half-time, the score was 5 -1, with Kenryu (half heart throb, half Street fighter), Alvin, JianLong and Ray making the difference to the game.

Buoyed by the performance in the 2nd quarter, our players upped their game in the 3rd quarter, scoring another three goals. By then, Jon (who till now has been pretty unlucky with scoring) made his debut goal. Also, our most improved player, Kiat Yao swum the length of the pool to pass the ball to their keeper. Meanwhile, Ray was breaking out his party tricks and when he scored his (in)famous back shot (for the first time), the crowds cheers were contrasted with the benches chorus of boos and other vulgarities directed at Ray. The normally mild, Kenryu looked like he was about to bite someone’s ear off. Fearing for my own safety, I took a few steps back.

At game point 8-1, the game looked promising and a win seems to be definite.

But as in all matches, nothing can be definite till the very end of the game, and the last quarter proved this right. With a tired mind and body, we conceded 3 goals, which brought a glimpse of hope for the opponents. Fortunately, we managed to send in another 2 goals to drown the very hope.

A waterpolo game isn’t complete without seeing Francis (aka. the shark) turn on his jets. With his (metaphorical) dorsal fin slicing through the surface of the water, he turned and went past the Hall 6 players like a motorboat, not once, not 10 times, but TWICE! Unfortunately, their keeper managed to save both his shots.

With that, 10 – 4 sealed the game.

We hit a double digit score for the first time this season, and it was evident how much our players have grown since we first entered the pool some 4 months ago. Of course, not everyone could play a part in this game, but the passion shown by those out of the pool was definitely heartwarming.

The final hurdle against Hall 3 is high, but definitely not insurmountable. Sir Edmund Hillary managed to climb Mount Everest, but... that has nothing to do with us! This aint’t mountain climbing.
