IHG Swimming Champions by Miranda Yeo

Our Hall 2 swim team cut through water with ease today and swept the championship in an intense and really close one-day competition.

Melissa Choo, Brenda, Art and Zhe Kang were up for first for Freestyle Heats, their speed putting us head and shoulders above the competition. They effortlessly came in a clear first, 4 whole seconds before the next closest hall. Our girls were gunning straight for the finals.

Next, Zhi Hong, Wang Peng, Alvin Teo and Jian Long kicked off Freestyle (M) heats. Conserving their energy, they clinched a comfortable third placing, putting them straight through to the finals.

In the breaststroke female heats, Cheyenne, Brenda Huimin and Zhe kang were single-minded and resolute, moving straight to finals with a first place finish and a timing of 3:07:72 - second team Hall 9 clocked 3:13:20.

Up next, Andy Daryl Eugene Hong Qian represented us in the breaststroke male heats. Up against strong IVP swimmers from Hall 3, it was a close fight to the finish and we won with less than a second's difference.

The mixed medley events were a tough fight for our swimmers as we were pitted against very strong competition especially from Halls 3 and 11. They came with their guns blazing, sending out IVP and Water Polo players who gave our already strong team a run for their money.

In the freestyle female finals, we were represented again by Melissa, Brenda, Art and Zhe Kang. We witnessed the ultimate speed, grace and elegance of our swimmers as they once again sailed past the competition with an impressive timing of 2: 10: 38. The second team from Hall 11 was a whole 9 seconds away!

The freestyle male finals was competed by Zhi Hong, Alvin, Ray and Jian Long. In a nail-biting race to the finish, Our team came in third after Halls 11 (1:48:17) and 3 (1:49:21).

In the breaststroke female finals, our sleek female fishes were up for a closer fight this time round. Hall 9 threw us some strong competition. In the last leg of the competition, Zhe Kang swam alongside a fast and furious contender, who threatened to overtake her. But her steady resolution gave her the necessary drive to keep going, giving us a first place finish. We were a mere 2 seconds away from them.

In the male breaststroke finals, our boys team of Andy, Daryl, Kenryu and Hong Qian beat rivals Hall 3 by a hair's breadth of slightly less than a second.

The final medley event united Andy, Mel, Jian Long and Art, and despite overwhelming competition, we came in a respectable 4th.

Overall, the sheer speed and strength of our swim team earned us a well-deserved champion placing. Special commendation goes to the girls' team for being so fast even our pro Yeo Kai Wen with his telescope lens had problems snapping close-ups - we had several photos of moving water droplets left behind by them as they powered on.

Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them -- a desire, a dream, a vision.

And that's how I'm sure we share a real dream and vision, Hall 2.
