Polo Boys

It was the match of the IHG season. The clash of the titans. The rightful final of the tournament. Hall 2 versus Hall 3. Ang Song Loo versus Lim Yao Xiang. The epic battle that decides who can earn the right of calling themselves the best Hall Water polo team in NTU (sorry Hall 6). The semi final that promises to be one hell of a crackling match, and it sure did not disappoint as we fought to our last breath before succumbing to a 13-6 defeat against the mighty powerhouse Hall 3.

Boasting the likes of two national water polo team players, it was always going to be an uphill battle denying Hall 3, let alone win them. Judging by the past year results, we would always be deemed as the big underdogs. It seemed like we would be up for a spanking. Nevertheless, every one of us refused to let that negativity get into our head and the players plunged into the pool eager to give our very best against them.

And gave our best we did, as we fought tooth and nail to ensure we match up to our opponents. Both teams took turns to score against each other at the start of the match and the match was tight. We were even leading Hall 3 at some point of the match, giving our supporters something to cheer about. Some of the players who deserve extra credit include makeshift keeper Teo Yu Hao, who put in a magnificent debut effort making a couple of outstanding saves to deny Hall 3 from extending their score line. Joel Li, our elder state player who played as the centre forward, also turned in strong performance. He led the frontline admirably, scoring a couple of important goals and showed great strength and perseverance overall to frustrate Hall 3 endlessly throughout the match. And of course, there is always our star player Ang Song Loo, who turned in a superhuman performance battling hard against Hall 3’s two giant players throughout all 4 quarters. His skill and prowess is a sight to behold and his steely never-say-die attitude is an inspiration to all other Hall 2 warriors fighting in the pool. By the end of the 2nd quarter, the score stands at 6-6. Some people may feel that it was a miracle that we could hold them back so long, but to the whole team, it was simply a vindication to the efforts that we had put in. We certainly showed Hall 3 that we were no pushovers.

Unfortunately, things fell apart after the first half and the less said about it the better. Hall 3 assumed control with their IVP and national team players asserting their authority against our tired players. The goals dried up for Hall 2 while Hall 3 started to score against us with ease. It was simply too far a distance to breach as they blasted 7 goals past us in the 3rd and 4th quarter, making our first half efforts futile in the end.

Nevertheless, we displayed great courage and strength against Hall 3 and no one can take that away from us. A valiant effort from each and every single player in the pool, and everyone deserves credit for putting their heart out there for the pride of Hall 2. A special thanks to all the Hall 2 residents, who gave us the fervent support the team needed and it was very much appreciated. I personally hope that when people look back at this match, they can remember it for the first half efforts that we put in because that was when we really showed the true Hall 2 spirit. Till next season, adieus.

Softball Guys!

Softball Guys

By Wing Sing

The IHG Softball season kicked off with a match against Hall 13, which was surprisingly, not worth the mention, since they were made up of random individuals who did not have any experience.
Our second match was against Hall 15, ever the experienced team and former champions 2 years ago. However, with their old guard graduated and newcomers still not as polished, we managed to take a victory over them despite the lack of players on our side. Having to call non-softballers down to fill up the team did not help with our morale given that we boast a 20-men team, more than enough to play 2 full teams. Thanks Shahul for lending us a hand in the match.
With that, we made it into the quarterfinals against a surprising underdog Hall 4 team. Some heated arguments occurred before our match as Hall 4 had already played 2 games before meeting us and wanted a rescheduling of match. However, having waited for close to 5 hours already, we found it ridiculous for such a request to be brought up. They gave in eventually and continued with the match held on our captain, Bryan’s softball career, as he made a very bold statement that he would quit if we lost the match.
With that said, wet conditions and other factors contributed to an extremely dismal performance of the team. Star players Si Kuan, Bryan and Zee had to make several inspiring speeches to bring the morale of the team up before we made a comeback victory of 5-4 runs, an extremely low-scoring match with the absence of major sluggers like Mustafa (who decided to extend his stay in Pakistan).

The very next day, the semi-finals were held in the late morning against last year’s runner-ups, Hall 11. The day didn’t start off well as pillar of the team, Bryan, met with an untimely family problem, which took him off the roster, as well as goliath on the outfield, Zhuo Song, down with chicken pox and of course, Mustafa being in Pakistan. Having close to half the first team being out of commission, we had to field a team comprising of young (and old) hopefuls with huge underlying potential but yet to be tested on the field.
With Sann shining brightly down on us, our star pitcher, Si Kuan gave a spectacular performance, pitching strikes after strikes, placing the ball at the ends of the strike zone which proved incredibly difficult for Hall 11 to get any good hits. The first inning ended with Hall 2 slightly in the lead, and we truly believed that we could win with a fairly green team.

However, things started to look bad as simple mistakes were made by both experienced and green players in the second inning. We allowed Hall 11 to close the gap but we managed to stay in the lead. Nonetheless, an incredible catch from Left Field Kin Sin boosted our morale and we went into the third inning.

Sadly, our weakened batting line-up proved to be our Achilles’ Heel as we succumbed in the third inning and narrowing lost the match 5-4. BUT, we held our heads high as we shook our opponents’ hands for we played a magnificent game.
Of course, we could not have gone so far without our faithful supporters who woke up so bloody early and cheered their hearts out.

With that said, the Hall 2 Softball team would like to pay tribute to our graduating batch of softballers. Zeeshan, Xin Ping, Alson and Ahmad, thanks for all the guidance you’ve given to us and for being the pillars of the team thus far. We promise to train extremely hard for next year’s IHG and bring everyone home in the finals.

We WILL make history, cheer for us Hall 2.

Hall 2 SQUASHES into FINALSSS!!!

Hall 2 SQUASH roars her way to the FINALS!

By the Hall 2 Squash Correspondent

Just a mere 3 hours ago saw Hall 2 emerge victorious over Hall 15 in the IHG Squash Semi-finals, meaning that Hall 2 was going to be in the IHG Squash Finals for the 8th consecutive year running. Ardent supporters such as Jeremy Seah (who helped to take pictures and taunt our opponents) and Yan Hui (our dear loyal, welfare sub-commer who helped prepare drinks yet again) turned up a whole 15 minutes before the match even started. And of course, not forgetting our secret, faithful supporters from Hall 6 and Hall 10. (please refer to photo)

Our star-studded squad comprising Zhirui, Peiqi, Clarence, Siying and Huaming waltzed their way through the match, with Zhirui drawing first blood with a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 triumph over his nemesis. Siying then bull-dozed her way through the court, winning the first set but was unfortunate to let the pressure take the better of her and we only managed to see a few glimpes of her undoubted potential. We did, however, see many glimpses of her Sylvester Stallone-look-a-like boyfriend.

The next match could be described as one of the biggest comebacks in history. Having already lost 2 sets, Clarence was on the very verge of losing his match and ending his winning streak. But the words, "For Honour and Glory" kept etching through his mind. Military-trained to persevere even in the most dire situations, he certainly did his Sergeants proud by putting all that training into good use - of all things, IHG Squash. By utilising his power forehard smash and exploiting his opponent's weak backhand, the commando crept up gradually yet convincingly to win 3-2 in a mouth-watering and heart-pounding match. In fact, this victory was so adrenaline-pumping that when it was announced that Clarence won, the latter gritted his teeth and balled his hands into fists tighter than wire before unleashing the 'tiger' in him. "RAWRH!" (please refer to photo)

Half an hour later, it was de facto modus operandi for Peiqi as she inflicted collateral damage and subdued her opponent in a one-sided affair to seal our route to the finals on 28 January (Thursday). In the last match, Huaming faced a fierce-looking foe who looked like Gouku from Dragonball (I hope Huaming's opponent doesn't see this). Despite this, Huaming remained impervious and relied on the presence of his secret girlfriend for motivation. In fact, the power of love was so potent that it helped Huaming to overwhelm his adversary 9-0, 9-0, 9-3, a stark contrast from previous matches. This wrapped up the night, with the final score being 4-1 in favour of Hall 2, where the finals now await us.

28 January, here we come.

Sepak Takraw !

Our takraw team went into IHG with 12 players and only 3 players with prior match experience. Most in the team were not familiar with the rules to start off with. Before our first match against hall 13, we had not even trained on a proper takraw court.

Our first match was against Hall 13. We had a good start by taking down the first set after a tough fight. However, nerves got to our players during the 2nd and 3rd set and we lost our opening game of the season. However, our players knew the potential we had and trained hard before our next game against hall 10.

For our second match against hall 10, due to some good serving by the opponents’ first tekong, we lost our first set quite convincingly. However, our players were not to be denied a first win as we stormed to a convincing win in the 2nd and 3rd set.

The next match was up against hall 13 again. This time, we went into the game confident that if we played to our potential, we knew we were not going to lose again. And true enough, we won all our 3 sets by good margins. And we were through to the quarter finals for the first time since who remembered.

We were unlucky enough to be drawn against last year’s finalists, hall 7. However, we knew that there was a chance for an upset. Although both teams were more or less even in the first set, our players made more unforced error than the opponents and lost the first set narrowly. In our 2nd set, it was obvious that our team wanted to win more than the opponent and we managed to get back on level terms with 1 game won apiece. There was an unfortunate delay in the 3rd set and the game had to be moved to be played in Hall 3’s indoor court. Not used to the crowd and bigger court size, our players were visibly overawed by the crowd and made countless mistakes to give the set and match away.

Unfortunate but our journey came to an end. However, we met our expectations by going one up and making it to the quarters, laying the foundation for the team next year. We will definitely build upon this experience and go even further next year! Cheers!

Latest News:

Hall 2 Squash cruises into the Semis with a Shout!

By Hall 2 Squash Correspondent, Teddy Tsang

Just last night, Hall 2 sealed an emphatic 5-0 victory over Hall 8 in the Quarter-Finals of IHG Squash 09/10, sending them into the Semi-finals with a shout! Encouraged by the sight of Hall 2's faithful supporters, especially our efficient welfare sub-commers Yan Hui and Fion, who prepared refreshing, ice-cold 100PLUS drinks, boosted the team's confidence as high as the sky's limit.

Resting top player Zhirui, Thaddeus was given the role of demolishing Hall 8's best player. And he did just that, mercilessly, with a 9-0, 9-0 scoreline. Up next came Peiqi, who also gave her opponent no face with a 9-0, 9-0 victory! Huaming then had a more evenly-contested match, driving shot after shot, drop after drop, and even came back from 6-1 down to win the match 9-4, 9-6, much to the delight of the Hall 2 supporters, especially a certain girl from Hall 6, rumoured to be his secret girlfriend.

Peggy's victory was no easy task either. She faced someone who had the strokes of Maria Sharapova, but thankfully, not the screams. With her sublime skills, Peggy finished off her opponent in less than 15 minutes. Then came Clarence, our badminton-converted squash player, who once again did us proud with a 9-0, 9-1 win. "Aiya. Wasted! I shouldn't have conceded 1 point!" the ex-commando lamented with a cheeky grin. But whether it's 9-0 or 9-8, we all know a win is still a win. And more importantly, if you had fun, that's all that matters.

In the Semi-finals, we hope to continue having the cheers and support of Hall 2, which will help propel us to greater glory!

Wordplay

Boggle
By Poh Wei Lun

There is no recreational game more mind-boggling than Boggle. On the fateful day of the competition, our team arrived at Hall 8 feeling as prepared as we could be. Despite training for a REALLY short amount of time, we were able to display flair and confidence and clinch key matches that would not spell ultimate defeat for us (aka last place).Fawn Cher and John Tan, being newbies to the game and having received little to no practice, managed to put 1 player to shame respectively and claim a win for themselves. Impressive if I may add. Their seemingly lacklustre performance in the beginning was obviously a facade.

Naturally, Team God, Lee Sze Yong was able to send ALL his opponents whimpering in a corner as he thrashed them with an average spread of 100 points. The 2nd seed, Poh Wei Lun, went home bagging 2 games, just slightly missing his target of 3 games. Frustration set in when he lost by just 1 friggin point in one particular match. ):

It was a wonderful feat that mere hours ( in total) of practice could prevent the occurence of an in-your-face defeat. This can only show the potential that the team can reach when they challenge the boggle boards again next season. Despite an inglorious defeat this season, we shall aspire to emerge as the black horse of IHRG 2010.

Scrabble

By Ivan

Our Scrabble team this year consisted of mainly rookie freshmen as most seniors were unavailable. Our initial expectations were low because of the lack of experience and we were not told of the rich past of Hall 2 in the IHRG. However, with strong backing from seniors Wen Yuan, Song Teck and especially Sze Yong, we were able to really put up a strong fight against other teams. Every opponent team, including the favourites, did not have easy times as we won against two teams and never lost by more than one board. Speaking of the experience, both of us managers feel that everyone was very enthusiastic throughout the competition and did their best at each game, always looking forward to the next. We never stopped learning. We always held on to the chance of winning and each game was equally brain and nerve wrecking.

Although we failed to qualify for the semi-finals, the whole team never felt demoralised and we kept learning and enjoying the experience. With this in mind, Sze Yong and the both of us feel that we have a strong core team now and if retained, it is highly likely that the team can achieve much more in the next IHRG, including emerging as champions. We are already starting plans for training, including joining external competitions to bolster our experience and to scout for more talents. Overall, the experience at IHRG 09/10 was a really good one and we hope to experience it again.

Squashers Storms to the Semis

By Thaddeus Tsang

The past 3 weeks saw the likes of Peiqi, Peggy, Jiaxian, Qiao Yi, Siying (Yes Auntie Mah!), Zhirui, Huaming, Clarence, Louis and Thaddeus engaging in fiery battles with Hall 3 and Hall 1 in the Inter-Hall Squash Games 09/10.

In the 1st game against Hall 3, we were presented with a surprise where they fielded unknown but pretty good players onto the courts. To make things worse, Star Player Zhirui came down with a bad diarrhea and flu in the morning (Wah you should have smelt my toilet. Worst atomic bomb ever.). Despite this predicament, we remain unfazed as we went on to thrash our opponents 4-1, with rookie Clarence even literally squashing his opponent 9-0, 9-0! What a feat!

The following game against Hall 1 was no easy fight either. Their whole team was practically the ex-TJC School Squash Team which boasted a wealth of experienced, fit and gigantic players. Peggy, playing her first competitive match in 3 years, first upset the odds by beating her opponent 2-1 in a skin-tight battle. Veterans Zhirui and Thaddeus then sealed the win with unanimous victories over their goliath-like opponents without sweat, storming the team into the semi-finals for the 8th consecutive time in IHG history! And 3 cheers to Eunice for coming down to support us despite being on crutches!

With more spectacular news to come, until then. ;)

Basketball (M)

Bball (M) vs Hall 12
16 December
By Soh Jung Hong

Our hall started strongly in the first quarter, with a commanding lead of 12 points. Due to the depth of our squad, we started the game with half court press, a strategy and tactic that was used mainly to drain out the opponent’s energy. Building on this momentum, we continued the bright start with glimpses of a championship team, and went on to win the game 66-21.We got our usual stellar outing from some of our main players, including ex-MVP Tan Rui Teck, who contributed 14 points and Tan Chun Hoe(ex-MVP cum national player), who has a double-double.

We did the little things that add up to winning games, including offensive rebounds and water-tight defence. Putting a halt to their key player, Terence, was a critical move that hurt hall 12. However, we also recognised that certain aspect of the game need to be improved. Turnover is one of our main concern which need to be addressed. We cannot afford to make a lot of mistakes against lesser opponents. We have to play almost flawless ball, and we have to outscrap, outshustle, outwork our opponents and keep believing in ourselves to have any realistic chance to clinching the championship. Tougher games await us, but with our strong team spirit, we believe we can go far.

Overall, it is still a commendable effort for hall 2, and a good opening game for both teams.

Basketball (F) Updates!

Hall 2 thrash Hall 13 in Group A basketball

December 16

By Rose Tan

SRC, Wednesday, December 16, 2009 – Hall 2 thrashed Hall 13 67-12 in the preliminary round of the Basketball Interhall Game. There was a total of 6 three pointers scored by #7 Shan Ting, #11 Jayne and #13 Kalai.
Hall 2 started out pretty strongly against Hall 13 with a point difference of 12 in the first quarter with a score of 18-6, given that they wasn’t any training done with the full team prior to the game, this was really a test of team spirit. Hall 13 managed to intercept the ball a few time but failed to convert.

After the first quarter, our team sort out the problems that are happening during the game and refined the strategies to play even better. The score was pulled even further to 32-10 by the end of second quarter. Hall 13 was constantly troubled by our defence at the three point line which resulted in a lot of turnovers and fastbreaks.
During the third quarter we were determined to increase our defence and we manage to deny Hall 13 any goals. Other than that, we speed up our attacks and the third quarter ended with a score of 53-10. The tight defence that we put up continued into the last quarter and the game ended with a score of 67-12.

Hall 2 will meet Hall 11 next in the group stage.

Hall 2 Triumph Over Hall 11 to Advance to Quarter Finals

December 18

By Rose Tan

SRC, Friday, December 18, 2009 – Hall 2 triumph over Hall 11 with a score of 48-6 in the preliminary round of the Basketball Interhall Game.

It was obvious before the match that our girls were not in the least intimidated by today’s rivals. Relaxed and confident, starting players Huilin, Jayne, Sarah, Shan Ting and Yuzhen entered the court. Backing them up for today were Adeline, Chin Pei, Eliza, Eunice, Rose, Tricia, and Zhihui

Hall 2 put up a strong defence thereby disallowing Hall 11 to penetrate in, forcing them to shoot from outside, but none made it into the basket. Though relaxed, Hall 2 played very well in the first quarter to lead with a big margin of 21 points.

In the second quarter, we see a decrease in attack. We attempted a number of shots but only manage to score 6 points. The score was 27-2 by the end of second quarter.

During the third quarter we manage to intercept several balls but failed to convert. However, this is a good sign to show that our defence had improved. The third quarter ended with a score of 34-6. The tight defence that we put up sustained into the last quarter and the game ended with a score of 48-6.

Hall 2 will proceed to the quarter finals.

Great fight put up by the Netball girls!

By Eliza Soh

Match VS Hall 6 - 17th dec
Hall 2 was to meet with Hall 6 for yet another qualifying netball match. The team met early to discuss the strategy to be played against the team rumoured to be one of the strongest teams around. As the time for the match drew nearer, the girls were raring to go, determined to put up a tough fight.
The first quarter went beyond the team's expectations, the girls produced an impressive shots, and they took full advantage of the chances created. Hall 2 lead on the scoreboard 9-8, surprising everyone around, including the Hall 6 team, who on seeing the level of play, put on their best seven on the next 3 quarters.

The team started off the 2nd quarter hungry for a win. However, a change of pace and stronger opponents saw Hall 2 clearly outclassed by the stronger team, and the following quarters ended with a score of 11-18, 15-32, and 18-44 respectively. The loss meant that the team would meet Hall 1 in a match to decide who will proceed on to the winner's pool, and play for the top 8 positions. The girls put up a tough fight, and there were glimmers of great play and defence which the girls should be proud of, despite the match ending in disappointment.

Match VS Hall 1 - 19th dec

The girls arrived to NIE early on the saturday morning, eager for the match that would determine their fate. This match would decide whether or not the team would proceed on to the quarter finals. Hall 2 was up against Hall 1, the team with renowned sportswoman, Cheryl Woo.

The first quarter saw the teams neck to neck with each other, with the score ending in a tie of 5-5. The players pushed hard and played with extreme intensity, however frustration overwhelmed the players when the match saw unfair calls made by the umpire.

The team lost the game with a final score of 19-22, we put the blame on the incompetency of the umpire. Unfortunately, our appeal for a rematch has been rejected. However, the team still stands unfazed and united, and will bring their best for Inter-Hall Games 2010/1.

IHRG Updates!

Carrom

By Meng YewOur Carrom team this year consisted of mainly freshmen and it was really hard to find people but with the gracious assistance and enthusiasm from our JCRC president Lawrence, we managed to pull in enough members to participate. Senior Kai Leong was one of our better players and he proved to be one of the best as he and Lawrences took the mens doubles with ease in round 6 and 7. Although many of our players were new to the game, it can proudly be said that Hall 2 has put up a decent fight against other halls as we managed to keep them at bay with draws and sometimes a win.
Although it was tiring and we did not manage to advance further, it was a good experience nonetheless for our players and i believe that with proper and organised training for next year 's games , with the caliber and pure talent of existing players, it is highly possible that Hall 2 can improve our carrom standards.

Snooker

By Lim Han Zhen

In this year’s IHRG, Hall 2 was pitted against Hall 3, 8 and 9 in the group stage. Players to watch for this year are Lai Koon, Kok Peng and Clive, who were among the core players from last year’s Snooker IHRG.

Our first opponent was against Hall 8. The team manager, Han Zhen, was tactically brilliant. His ingenious team selection meant that he himself was soundly beaten by the IVP captain playing for Hall 8 in the first 4-ball game. However, Tony managed to score a win in the second 4-ball game, while Lai Koon and Clive did not disappoint and pick up wins in Snooker as well. This means that Hall 2 managed to garner their first team victory in our maiden round. The mood was buoyant, emotions were running high and we were all confident we can go beyond the group stage into the quarterfinals.

In the second round, we went head to head with Hall 9 in the winner’s bracket. IF Hall 2 win this round, we will have qualified for the quarterfinals. Alas, luck was not with Hall 2. Although Kok Peng and Dylan put up a terrific fight in the 4-ball segment, Hall 9’s players were able to keep their cool and score victories in both games. Confidence buoyed after 2 wins, Hall 9’s Snooker players also played to their full abilities and notched up wins for their Hall. However, not all is lost. Hall 2, having won the first round, still has the chance to advance if they manage to win round 3, the runner-ups bracket.

Hall 8 managed to stage a comeback in their second round against Hall 3, knocking Hall 3 out of the tournament and thus securing a rematch with Hall 2. The stage is all set for an explosive finale. Our 4-ball players, Kok Peng and Tony, managed to take the lead at various points of their games. Yet Lady Luck did not favour our Hall 2 players and both the opponents managed heartbreaking comeback victories. Yet, we kept our hopes up. We did not despair. In our darkest moments, we look to Lai Koon, Clive and Han Zhen to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Clive played well and truly to his abilities and managed a comfortable win over his opponent. In an exciting Snooker match, Lai Koon was initially in deep water as he picked up a couple of unfortunate fouls but a heroic fight back had the crowd holding its breath towards the end of the game. Alas, the opponent played a highly defensive game and Lai Koon was unable to steer team towards victory. Thus was the fifth Snooker game not played and Han Zhen unable to display his budding Snooker potential in this year’s IHRG.

Although Hall 2 did not manage to progress beyond the preliminary round this year, the Hall 2 players have tried their very best, and but for a stroke of luck, Hall 2 will be contesting in the quarterfinals. However, do not despair, for this defeat had only managed to spur us on and fuel our burning desire to even better the next time round. Rest assured that for the next Snooker IHRG, Hall 2 will come out with all guns blazing!
